I already mentioned the imagery, but the impressive part of the writing was how poetically beautiful even the evil moments read. Then they build and build, until all the light is gone, and there’s only me and Arien and the gathering dark. At first they’re smoke, a haze that thickens. It shouldn’t be him, and yet- I move toward him as the shadows cloud over us, filling the room. He looks at me with eyes gone solid black they change when he dreams, and those blank eyes in his frightened face are so wrong. Shadows spill from his hands like unfurled ribbons, shrouding the floor with an inky mist. The author takes those word pictures and weaves them into emotions that give Lakesedge the feel of a fairytale you’ve read before, only it isn’t. Starting from page one, the descriptions of Arien’s nightmares and the way Leta sees them are written like poetry.
